  Article: Intestinal Motility
Intestinal motility involves several types or patterns of smooth muscle contraction: segmentation that occurs in the circular layer of smooth muscle, pendular movements which occurs in the longitudinal layer, and peristalsis. These intestinal movements can be very vigorous. Most of the vigor slides the contents of the intestine back and forth within its lumen, mixing food with the acid and enzymes of digestive secretions, and exposing the entire mass to the enormous absorptive surface of the small intestines.

In this experiment, students will measure the frequency and the amplitude of intestinal contractions and the relative level of tonus in the muscle before and after changes in the conditions presented to the muscle. They will observe and record spontaneous smooth muscle activity from the rat jejunum or ileum before recording and analyzing the responses of this tissue to physiologically relevant agents or conditions, such as: stretch, acetylcholine (ACH), curare, atropine, epinephrine, serotonin, changes in pH, changes in calcium ion concentration, and sodium cyanide.
