  Experiments: Smooth Muscle Motility

In this month's newsletter, two experiments that study the properties of two different types of smooth muscle, rat uterus or rat intestine, are featured.  The properties that are studied include: spontaneous contractile activity, muscle tone, muscle plasticity, and the effects of various physiologically relevant agonists on the frequency and degree of contraction. 

The experiments are performed using an iWorx STB-125 Student Tissue Bath that facilitates the maintenance of the tissues at their optimal temperatures and aeration levels.  The forces generated by these tissues can easily be measured with an iWorx FT-302 dual-range force transducer.

Tech Note:  STB-125 Student Tissue Bath

The STB-125 is a single channel tissue bath assembly with many features that make it suitable for use in both teaching and research laboratories.  The 25 ml tissue chamber is designed to accommodate a variety of skeletal, smooth, and cardiovascular muscle, and to maintain the proper aeration and temperature of the tissue and buffer.  The STB-125 also includes a transducer positioner, a tissue support rod, a stand, clamps, and tubing for connections to a water supply, a drain, and an air supply.
