Experiment:
Ventilation
and Oxygen Saturation Levels
Part 2 (continued from June Newsletter) |

This experiment is a continuation of Experiment HS-6:
Ventilation and Oxygen Saturation Levels, which is available
here.
Breathing is a
function that can be controlled either voluntarily or
involuntarily. During exercise, the autonomic nervous system
adjusts the depth and rate of breathing during the different
segments of the exercise routine. The person performing the
exercise routine can also voluntarily change his or her
breathing pattern, which influences the autonomic nervous system
and leads to additional changes in heart rate, circulation,
muscle tension, and many other bodily functions that are unseen.
The voluntary breathing patterns used in this experiment will
alter the frequency and volume of air exchanged in the lungs
leading to changes in the oxygen saturation level of the blood
and the heart rate.
In this experiment,
students will perform different abdominal and thoracic breathing
techniques and demonstrate the effects of these breathing
patterns on oxygen saturation levels in the blood and on heart
rate as measured by a pulse oximeter. The subject’s breathing
rate will be also measured using a respiration monitor and used
in conjunction with the other parameters to demonstrate the
integration of the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems. |

Note: The PO2-100D Pulse Oximeter and RM-204
Respiration Monitor |
|
The PO2-100D Pulse Oximeter is a simple device that can,
easily and non-invasively, measure the oxygen saturation
levels of blood through a sensor that clips over the end of
the subject’s finger or toe. The sensor functions by
emitting two wavelengths of light, detecting the absorbance
of each wavelength by the oxygenated and deoxygenated forms
of hemoglobin, using the programming in the unit to
determine the ratio of the two forms of hemoglobin, and
expressing the level of oxygen saturation in the blood as a
percentage.
The RM-204 Respiration Monitor is
a transducer used to measure of relative depth and frequency
of breathing in a human subject during experiments where it
is impractical to monitor breathing with a spirometer. The
RM-204 permits breathing rates and relative amplitudes to be
measured easily, accurately, and unobtrusively while the
subject performs another task like a psychological test.
