Experiment:
Oxygen
Saturation Levels and Ventilation |
|
Pulse oximetry is
an easy, non-invasive method to indirectly determine the amount
of oxygen in a person's blood. The most common type of pulse
oximeter measures the oxygen saturation (SpO2) of blood using a
sensor clipped over a fingertip or on an earlobe.
The sensor
functions by emitting two wavelengths of light and detecting the
absorbance of each wavelength by the oxygenated and deoxygenated
forms of hemoglobin. The programming in the unit then
determines the ratio of the two forms of hemoglobin, and
expresses the level of oxygen saturation in the blood as a
percentage.
In this experiment,
students will perform exercises that demonstrate how air
exchange in the lungs, also known as ventilation, affects the
oxygen saturation of the subject’s blood. Students will record
oxygen saturation levels in the blood of the subject during
normal breathing, apnea, hyperventilation, the Valsalva
maneuver, and chest expansion. At the same time the oxygen
saturation level is recorded, the subject’s heart rate and
breathing will be monitored as a demonstration of the
integration of the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems.

Tech
Note: The PO2-100D Pulse Oximeter |
|
The PO2-100D
pulse oximeter is a simple device that can, easily and
non-invasively, measure the oxygen saturation levels of
blood through a sensor that clips over the end of the
subject’s finger or toe. The sensor functions by emitting
two wavelengths of light, detecting the absorbance of each
wavelength by the oxygenated and deoxygenated forms of
hemoglobin, using the programming in the unit to determine
the ratio of the two forms of hemoglobin, and expressing the
level of oxygen saturation in the blood as a percentage.
