Experiment:
Breathing Techniques and Variation
in Heart Rate
|
|
The effect of
breathing on heart activity has been known for thousands of
years and studied extensively for hundreds of years. Breathing
is a function that can be performed both voluntarily and
involuntarily. When exercising and recovering from exercise, the
depth and rate of breathing are adjusted by the autonomic
nervous system. Conscious breathing can influence portions of
the autonomic nervous system that control heart rate,
circulation, muscle tension, and many other bodily functions not
easily assessed.
In this experiment,
students perform some voluntary breathing techniques and measure
the effect that these techniques have on their heart rates and
respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) prominence. The
different breathing techniques
include: breath holding (apnea), shallow abdominal breathing,
rapid bellows breathing, and deep abdominal breathing. |

Tech
Note: RM-204 Respiration Monitor |
|
The
RM-204 Respiration Monitor
is a transducer used to measure of relative depth and
frequency of breathing in a human subject during experiments
where it is impractical to monitor breathing with a
spirometer. The RM-204 permits breathing rates and relative
amplitudes to be measured easily, accurately, and
unobtrusively while the subject performs another task like a
psychological test. |

RM-204 from this
