Experiment:
Lung
Volumes and Heart Rate |
|
Respiratory Sinus
Arrhythmia (RSA), the cyclic change in heart rate that is driven
by breathing, has been studied for centuries. During inhalation,
the diaphragm contracts and moves downward to create a negative
pressure in the thoracic cavity. This negative pressure pulls
more blood into the major veins in the chest, which improves
venous return to the heart and increases the amount of blood
entering the right side of the heart. Since more blood is
entering the heart, more blood needs to be pumped out of the
heart. And, the solution for moving more blood is an increase in
the heart rate. During exhalation, the diaphragm relaxes causing
the pressure in the thoracic cavity to be less negative. As the
result, the venous return decreases, less blood enters the
heart, and the heart rate can decrease.
In this experiment,
students will determine the effect of the inhalation volume on
heart rate. The heart rates of subjects will be recorded while
they are breathing normal tidal, sub-maximal, and maximal
inhalations. Heart rates will also be recorded as subjects
simulate deep breathing by moving the muscles involved in
respiration without the exchange of air into and out of the
lungs. |
