Experiment: Respiratory Exchange Ratio (RER) |
|
The
energy requirements of the body are met with a mixture of energy
derived from carbohydrates and fats. The type of activity being
performed determines the proportion of carbohydrates and fats
being utilized. As the intensity of activity increases, the
demand for energy increases, and a greater proportion of the
demand is met by the oxidation of carbohydrates. As the ratio
of energy supplied by fats and carbohydrates shifts during
changes in activity, the ratio of carbon dioxide produced to
oxygen consumed also shifts. The ratio of carbon dioxide
produced to oxygen consumed during cellular metabolism can be
measured by determining the changes in the concentrations of
oxygen and carbon dioxide in the air that passes into and out of
the lungs.
The amounts of oxygen consumed and carbon dioxide produced are
measured using an oxygen/carbon dioxide gas analyzer connected
to a spirometer. The GA-200 Gas Analyzer measures the
concentration of oxygen and carbon dioxide in inspired and
expired air while the spirometer determines the volumes of
inspired and expired air. When the concentrations and the
volumes are brought together in a series of equations, the
volumes of oxygen consumed per minute (VO2) and
carbon dioxide produced per minute (VCO2) are
determined. The ratio of VCO2/VO2 is the
Respiratory Exchange Ratio (RER), which can be used to determine
the proportions of energy being produced by carbohydrates and
fats.
In this experiment, students will measure the VO2 and
VCO2 of a subject while resting, hyperventilating,
recovering from hyperventilation, and recovering from light or
moderate exercise using an iWorx GA-200 CO2/O2
gas analyzer. The gas analyzer is connected to a spirometry
system designed for the quick and easy measurements of lung
volumes and gas concentrations from samples of expired air. The
RER for the various activity periods will be calculated from the
values for VCO2 and VO2. |

The GA-200 Carbon Dioxide
and Oxygen Gas Analyzer
|
|
The GA-200 is a gas analyzer that integrates the sampling
system with the sensors to create a compact, easy to use,
and affordable unit for measuring the concentrations of
oxygen and carbon dioxide. The GA-200 has a fluorescent
display for programming the unit and observing measurements,
a keypad for programming the unit’s operation and
calibration, and analog outputs that allow the unit to be
connected to data recording units like the iWorx 214.
The
GA-200 uses laser diode absorption technology and infrared
detection to measure the concentrations of oxygen and carbon
dioxide, respectively. These features give the GA-200 a
very fast response time that enables breath to breath
analysis of gas concentrations to be made, in addition to
measurements from mixing chambers. |

GA-200 Gas Analyzer
The GA-200 gas
analyzer is calibrated at the factory and is ready to take
measurements immediately. Just connect the source of the gas
sample to the gas analyzer with the proper connectors and
press the RUN key.
