Metabolic Rates with ETS-PEAK
Resting, Active, and Exercising Metabolic Rates
In this experiment, students will measure the VO2 , VCO2 , and heart rate of a subject while he or she is resting while reclining; performing an activity, like reading or working on a computer while sitting; and, exercising at various levels of intensity from easy to moderate. From these measurements, the subject’s RER, proportion of energy sources utilized, and effectiveness of cardiac fitness will be determined.
These measurements will be performed quickly and easily using a gas analyzer connected to a spirometry system and a heart rate monitor.
